In the 5 days we've been in McLeod Ganj, we've managed to really get to know the area and the people. McLeod Ganj is kind of like a hippie town made up of mostly Tibetans as well as many Indians. There are many travellers seeking refuge from their daily lives, taking yoga and retreating to the mountains for some fresh air. The main square is pretty lively for a small Tibetan colony such as this, especially since the Indian Premiere League (IPL) has 3 cricket matches just 10 km away. (More to come of this later!)
Eric and I have dined at many cafes (we don't have a kitchen and the food is fairly cheap... 20 rupees for scrambled eggs with tomato.. that's only 40 cents! But the prices are not the best part of our dining experience. The view is magnificent! Imagine this... sitting on a rooftop with a view of the Himalyan mountains, both forest and snow-covered... yes, we can see 3 snow covered peaks not too far from where we stay.
The people here are very nice as well... we've taken quite a liking to the Tibetans in the area. Our volunteering correspondent took us around the town and showed us the Dalai Llama's residency and primary temple and museum. We've also started our first day of volunteering with him! We helped a Tibetan monk write a letter to his friend in Australia as well. He and a friend will be hiking with us next weekend. In addition, we started playing basketball with some Tibetans who play pick-up games on a court nearby. We've made many friends there as well, and already feel at home when walking around.
This is town is lovely and there's something new to discover around every corner. We went to a cricket game yesterday! Stay tuned. That adventure requires its own entry!
