First Night in Delhi

Here we are! Sitting in our hotel room in a Tibetan colony in New Delhi. Last night while we were waiting at the airport in Newark, we ran into a woman whom we'd spoken with at King of Prussia mall 2 months prior to leaving about Ladakh and Dharmasala, India.  She was sitting at a cafe passing time before her flight to India. Funny, she  was on our same flight!

Once we got into India the organized chaos of the Indian roadways or 'Marg' began!  Our driver, sent from the nonprofit we're volunteering through shimmied through the tightest spots on the highways, narrowly missing rickshaws, pedestrians, cyclists, and other autos.  While waiting at a stop light (at 10 o'clock at night, a man tred to sell us sun shades for our car, women adorned with beautfil saris and suits were sitting behind there husbands on motorbikes traveling through the dust of Delhi traffic.  Last night we stepped into 93 degree heat at 10:15 at night. Insane, huh?

When we finally reached the neighborhood of our hotel, it was like a scene out of Indiana Jones.  We were walking through a narrow alley, dogs were seated everywhere, one was laying right in the middle of the walkway, Eric and I narrowly missed stepping on her!  As we reached our hotel, I heard for the umteenth time from Eric asking when we'll be heading out tonight?  I asked the hostess at our hotel whether it was safe to venture out in the market at this time of night. She insisted on us staying in the hotel till daybreak. I knew she would say that.

Now it's about 4 o' clock in the morning and we're wide awake waiting for the sun to rise so we can venture out into the fruit stands and crafts of the market just below us. I'm dripping with sweat right about now so first I'm going to get a shower... well, a human version of a bird bath actually... using a bucket and cup.  Can anyone say, "Refreshing?"
