So I bet you're wondering how our 12 hour bus ride from New Delhi to Mcleod Ganj went... to start things off it ended up being a 13 hour bus ride...due to a flat tire and a few random stops. Our drivers felt the need to make up time by driving like a maniac throughout the winding roads that lead us up the Himalayan Mountains to Mcleod Ganj. So here's the summary of our memorable voyage... We jumped in the bus early to avoid the beggars waiting at the stop who were clearly attracted to Eric's pearly white skin. Then soon after leaving Delhi we realized that this would be one of the most frustating bus rides of our life. "Why?"you may ask. Let's just say it's hard to sleep when a little boy is pulling your hair, his Mom is potentially trying to pickpocket you while sleeping (she regained her coolness when her cellphone played "Wave Your Flag" from the World Cup), it's hard to sleep when another kid is singing to every American pop song imaginable in his Alvin and the Chipmunk singing voice, (it took us a while to figure out who was singing because he was wearing a dust mask and would start singing softer when we turned around).
Not to mention this bus gave a whole new meaning to reclining seats. The man seated infront of Eric was reclined basically into Eric's lap... poor guy was trying to sleep and woke up with a sudden bang to the knees from the seat infront. Oh and our drivers seemed to have their own business on the side picking up random people and dropping off packages throughout our journey. Anytime someone was picked up they would assemble in the cabin of the bus... I'm talking at least 8 people were in the small room at a time. And as if that wasn't enough of a distraction for our bus driver, through the winding roads of the Himalayas I caught him chatting it up on his cell phone!
In regards to making up for lost time from our late departure, you had to be on your toes when at a rest stop. The horn sounds twice and if you're not on the bus, sorry Charlie. While at a rest stop, Eric and I had just received our dinner and we heard a bus horn sounding outside, we leaped out of our chairs, food barely touched, left some rupees for the meal, and sprinted out the door only to find that it wasn't our bus that was leaving. Phew. It was that same rest stop that our bus got a flat tire, just 3 hours into our journey. After some roti, chai, and washroom our drivers decided to change the tire... We agreed that once they got started, our team of drivers could change a tire for a Nascar pit crew.
So how would you have like to be on that bus ride, eh?
