July 13th was the 60th year anniversary of the Liberation of Tibet. On July 13th in 1951 China claimed Tibet as its own, thus starting 60 years of tyranny and infringement on Tibetans' freedom. The Organization called Students for Free Tibet put on a demonstration to spread awareness of the true meaning of this date. Sixty students, representing 60 years of occupation marched through the streets in a long queue to the beat of a Tibetan drum. The deep tone of the drum echoed through our ears as we marched, each student wearing a black t-shirt labeled "Free Tibet," each wearing a black armband, and holding a black flag. The demonstration lasted only 30 minutes, ending with a speech, from the leader of the organization, who let his heart speak aloud for all onlookers to hear. The demonstration was quite a message to travelers in the region who are not familiar with the situation in China. I hope that it makes them ask questions. Their curiosity can and will certainly give Tibetans the opportunity to return to a free or at least autonomic Tibetan region.
